The only constant is change itself. Recognizing this inevitable reality, the City must intelligently manage that change. Thirty-odd years ago a series of major reforms began changing the direction of the planning process which steadily improved the quality of development in the city, with notable successes like False Creek South and Granville Island, and mixed outcomes in the inner residential neighborhoods.
Our challenge today is to update that planning process in anticipation of 100,000+ new residents within the city proper. As population increases, densification will occur. And more people means not only more homes but more workplaces, and more options for transportation connections. Demographic shifts toward an aging population, smaller families and changes in the workplace must all be considered as we plan for Vancouver’s future in the 21st Century.
